The formal CARO naming scheme is an evolving document, nearing the completion of its first formal update in just over a decade. The formalized specification and a version of this paper, expanded with several more illustrative examples, will be forthcoming shortly. The hope is that this paper, and its final, expanded form will be a useful `laboratory guide’ to naming practices. If this engenders further cross-vendor cooperation on naming issues, as is hoped, it is also expected that greater antivirus community discussion of naming issues will ensue. In turn, the future extension and development of the naming scheme should occur more closely to real-time, rather than being a once-a-decade occurrence.
